PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Compliance Division oversees the Medical Waste Management Program aboard MCAS Miramar in conjunction with Naval Medical Center San Diego's Branch Medical Clinic.  The generation, handling, storage, treatment, and disposal of medical waste aboard MCAS Miramar is primarily managed by Branch Medical Clinic personnel and is regulated by California's Medical Waste Management Act, BUMED (Bureau of Medicine and Surgery) Instructions, and Naval Medical Center San Diego policy.

Waste Management Program Responsibilities

Responsibilities for medical waste management aboard MCAS Miramar is shared between Station Environmental, San Diego Naval Medical Center, the parent unit of the Branch Medical Clinic on Miramar;  3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, which operates several aid stations; and 4th Medical Battalion, that also operate a medical aid station.

The branch medical clinic and various aid stations at MCAS Miramar may provide medical services to military members and their families as well as military retirees.  These services may result in the generation of regulated medical waste (RMW) and pharmaceutical waste with hazardous waste properties.

Auditing for compliance to regulations governing medical waste management at the Branch Medical Clinic (BMC) is conducted by staff from Naval Medical Center San Diego (parent organization) and MCAS Miramar environmental staff.  The aid stations located on Miramar that are not part of the BMC are audited semi-annually by staff of the Compliance Division.
