Miramar’s 2006 air show received six first-place awards  from the California and Nevada Festivals and Events Association.

Representatives from Marine Corps Community Services, also know as MCCS, accepted the awards during a presentation at the Burbank Airport Marriott Hotel in Burbank, Calif., Feb. 20.

The association, more commonly known as CalFest, the sponsor of the awards, is a community enhancing organization designed to promote a better understanding of special events.

The air show earned  first-place recognition for event map, event program, radio commerical, TV commercial and  T-shirt design.

Judged against all events enrolled in California and Nevada in these categories, the awards are a direct reflection of the whole station’s efforts, according to Irma Malabanan, the marketing director for MCCS, here. It illustrates the teamwork that the base put into hosting this massive event.

The Miramar Air Show also earned first place recognition from the International Council of Air Shows for the best radio commercial and third place for its sponsorship solicitation package.

“Every year, MCAS Miramar wins awards in different categories,” said Ed Downum, air show coordinator for MCCS Miramar. “It’s a confidence builder. It’s motivating to everyone who works on the air show, and it shows them that everything we do – the quality and award-winning work – is recognized by our peers. There is a lot of pride in what we do.”

Although MCCS Miramar brought in several awards for the past year’s air show, they plan to continue their streak of excellence, starting with the upcoming air show Oct. 12, 13 and 14.

POLICY

The most important starting point for an EMS* is the development of an environmental policy. ISO14001 requires local governments to implement their own environmental policy. The environmental policy acts as a basis for the environmental management system.

PLANNING

ISO14001 requires that an environmental management system is planned properly. It requires the organization to consider the following carefully: Environmental Aspects; Legal and Other Aspects; Objectives and Targets; and an Environmental Management Program.

IMPLEMENTATION

The two requirements for implementation of an EMS is to define, document, and communicate roles, responsibilities and authorities, and to allocate the resources needed to implement and control the EMS.

CHECKING

The key requirement in this EMS step is to regularly monitor and measure key characteristics of activities and operations that could have a significant impact on the environment. Changes to EMS procedures may become necessary in order to deal with nonconformances with the EMS, with mitigating environmental impacts, or corrective and preventive action.

REVIEW

The management review process ensure that information is collected to enable management to carry out proper review. Top management review the need for changes to policy, objectives and targets, and ensure that a commitment to continual improvement is being demonstrated.
