Thousands of service members and civilians from across the country are expected to visit San Diego during Fleet Week San Diego 2007.

The commanding general of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Maj. Gen. Terry G. Robling, tossed the ceremonial first pitch for the San Diego Padres and Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game at PETCO Park Monday, marking the official beginning of Fleet Week 2007.

The Padres organization gave more than 2,800 free tickets to military members and their families in support of the event.

San Diego is home to more than 100,000 service members and their families, making it one of the largest military cities in the country.

“Fleet Week is a great way to see all aspects of the military,” said Sgt. Michael J. Pacitti, administrative assistance unit non commissioned officer-in-charge, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. “The San Diego community is outstanding and does amazing in making us feel at home. Their support is astonishing.”

The first San Diego Fleet Week kicked off May 29, 1935 with a Marine Corps color guard leading a parade across Cabrillo Bridge.

According to San Diego Fleet Week’s official website, www.fleetweeksandiego.org, the mission of the event is to properly pay tribute to and say “thank you” to San Diego’s military men and women. Fleet Week acknowledges service members for “Serving America Twice,” in the defense of the nation and as volunteers in San Diego communities.

One of the largest events during Fleet Week is the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Air Show which will be held Oct. 12, 13, and 14.

POLICY

The most important starting point for an EMS* is the development of an environmental policy. ISO14001 requires local governments to implement their own environmental policy. The environmental policy acts as a basis for the environmental management system.

PLANNING

ISO14001 requires that an environmental management system is planned properly. It requires the organization to consider the following carefully: Environmental Aspects; Legal and Other Aspects; Objectives and Targets; and an Environmental Management Program.

IMPLEMENTATION

The two requirements for implementation of an EMS is to define, document, and communicate roles, responsibilities and authorities, and to allocate the resources needed to implement and control the EMS.

CHECKING

The key requirement in this EMS step is to regularly monitor and measure key characteristics of activities and operations that could have a significant impact on the environment. Changes to EMS procedures may become necessary in order to deal with nonconformances with the EMS, with mitigating environmental impacts, or corrective and preventive action.

REVIEW

The management review process ensure that information is collected to enable management to carry out proper review. Top management review the need for changes to policy, objectives and targets, and ensure that a commitment to continual improvement is being demonstrated.
