MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. -- Sergeant Daniel I. Duncan recently returned from a nine-month deployment in Djibouti, Africa and never expected to receive the shock he did.
On Saturday Duncan, his wife Shannon and their newborn baby received an invitation to join a gathering of Ford Bronco enthusiasts with So Cal Broncos and classicbroncos.com, where he was shocked to learn that his wife with help of more than 25 San Diego natives worked since May to restore his 1976 Ford Bronco truck.
“I was speechless when they handed me the keys,” said Duncan, a ground radio repairman with Marine Air Support Squadron 6, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. “It took the breath right out of me like someone hit me in the chest.”
According to local Bronco enthusiast, Matt Putman the lead restorer, the groups wanted to give back to the military guys that give so much to us.
“I posted a question on their online forum asking how the best way to go about getting the truck running,” said Shannon. “Matt came over and looked at the truck and just took it from there.”
Five months and $10,000 in donated parts and labor later Matt, Shannon and the rest of the contributors delivered the newly rebuilt truck to its rightful owner.
“I really don’t know too many women that would go to these lengths for their husbands,” said Duncan. “I am so thankful to her and everyone that put their time and money into it. It’s awesome to know that there are people like this who still spend their time and money to show support to service members.”
According to Putman, the group of men and women that made the rebuild possible are hoping to inspire more local support for the military.
