MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. -- Marine Corps Air Station Miramar has numerous employment opportunities, from monitoring wildlife aboard MCAS Miramar, to managing computer servers.
The Marine Corps has many civil service job positions available for civilians seeking employment aboard the air station.
Marines close to their end of active service date, prior service military and civilians can receive information for positions through the human resources office aboard the station.
People interested in a career as a civil service employee can visit https://chart.donhr.navy.mil/ to begin the employment process.
“The Marine Corps is hiring right now and people looking for jobs can go to the Web site to search for positions, set up a profile and create a resume,” said Rosemary Meriwether, a human resources assistant with the station. “Miramar has openings for fire fighters, police officers and dozens of other occupations.”
Civil service employees, also called civilian Marines, receive health benefits including the Federal Employees’ Health Benefits Program, Federal Employees’ Dental and Vision Program, and the Federal Flexible Spending Account Program.
“On top of medical benefits, civil service employees have job security and locality payment to help match the cost of living in San Diego,” said Meriwether. “After you are employed you can even transfer to different government agencies outside the Department of Defense (such as the FAA, FDA, etc.)”
Civilian Marines help Marines and sailors accomplish their mission through expertise and experience, explained Meriwether.
“The Marine Corps is looking for prior-service military to fill these positions,” said Meriwether. “Prior-service military have an advantage over people without military service because of previous experience and some already have the security clearance from when they served.”
A civil service employee’s salary can range from $20,000 as a GS-1 to more than $116,000 as a GS-15. Some former Marines could start at a higher GS level than others, if they had previous experience and leadership, according to Meriwether.
While the individual department holds the actual interview, the human resources office encourages each person to prepare for interviews, explained Meriwether.
