FDA warns Hydroxycut consumers of health risks

7 May 2009 | Cpl. Fredrick J. Coleman Marine Corps Air Station Miramar-EMS

A media release from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration states the manufacturer of Hydroxycut recently recalled 14 products due to health concerns.

As a result, Marine Corps Community Services here discontinued selling the dietary supplements at all station retail locations, according to Master Sgt. Heath McIntyre, the main exchange manager and MCCS staff noncommissioned officer in charge.

The FDA received a report of one death and 23 health issues to include jaundice, liver injuries and cardiovascular disorder as a result of the use of the Hydroxycut products.

“Hydroxycut products contain a variety of ingredients and herbal extracts,” said Dr. Linda Katz, the Interim Chief Medical Officer with FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition during a media briefing May 1. “Based on the information available to FDA, the agency has not yet determined which ingredient dosages or other health related factors may be associated with the risk of developing liver disease or other health related problems related to Hydroxycut.”

The FDA urges consumers who experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, excessive fatigue, weakness, stomach or abdominal pain, itching and loss of appetite to seek medical attention.

Healthcare professionals and consumers are encouraged to report serious side effects or product quality problems with the use of these products to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online by visiting www.fda.gov/MedWatch/htm.

POLICY

The most important starting point for an EMS* is the development of an environmental policy. ISO14001 requires local governments to implement their own environmental policy. The environmental policy acts as a basis for the environmental management system.

PLANNING

ISO14001 requires that an environmental management system is planned properly. It requires the organization to consider the following carefully: Environmental Aspects; Legal and Other Aspects; Objectives and Targets; and an Environmental Management Program.

IMPLEMENTATION

The two requirements for implementation of an EMS is to define, document, and communicate roles, responsibilities and authorities, and to allocate the resources needed to implement and control the EMS.

CHECKING

The key requirement in this EMS step is to regularly monitor and measure key characteristics of activities and operations that could have a significant impact on the environment. Changes to EMS procedures may become necessary in order to deal with nonconformances with the EMS, with mitigating environmental impacts, or corrective and preventive action.

REVIEW

The management review process ensure that information is collected to enable management to carry out proper review. Top management review the need for changes to policy, objectives and targets, and ensure that a commitment to continual improvement is being demonstrated.
