2009 MCAS Miramar Air Show next weekend

18 Sep 2009 | Lance Cpl. Justis T. Beauregard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar-EMS

People from all over the world will travel to the flight line here Oct. 2, 3 and 4, to watch skilled civilian and military pilots perform during the 2009 Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Air Show.

This year’s air show, themed “A Salute to Teamwork,” will include the U.S. Navy’s Flight Demonstration Team, the Blue Angels, Canadian Forces’ nine-plane Snowbirds Demonstration Team, Patriots I-39 jet team, old warbirds, a sail plane, hang glider, a jet truck and many more.

This year will be the first time the Blue Angels and the Canadian Snowbirds both perform at the Miramar air show.

“More people are going to local air shows because they are great family events at a great price,” said Irma Malabanan, the marketing director for MCAS Marine Corps Community Services. “For Miramar’s air show there is free parking, free admission and free blanket seating. You can come and not spend a dime.”

The air show is part of Fleet Week San Diego 2009, which recognizes the contributions made by Naval services to San Diego. The air show is an open house event and allows MCAS Miramar’s neighbors and visitors to experience the air station and interact with Marines.

“This is a good opportunity for the taxpayers to see what they are paying for,” said Malabanan. “We are the only air show with a Marine Air-Ground Task Force assault demonstration, and spectators will see aircraft from all major military branches.”

The 2008 MCAS Miramar Air Show attracted 750,000 visitors, and MCCS expects even more next week.

There is upgraded seating available, including grandstands and box seats, up to the exclusive Semper Fi Chalet. Chalet tickets include meals and beverages.

Malabanan recommends coming early because the Snowbirds’ demonstration starts at 10:30 a.m.

Gates will open to the public at 8 a.m. each day. A radio-controlled aircraft demonstration will be from 8 to 9 a.m. Day show performances are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Twilight Air Show is from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sat.

POLICY

The most important starting point for an EMS* is the development of an environmental policy. ISO14001 requires local governments to implement their own environmental policy. The environmental policy acts as a basis for the environmental management system.

PLANNING

ISO14001 requires that an environmental management system is planned properly. It requires the organization to consider the following carefully: Environmental Aspects; Legal and Other Aspects; Objectives and Targets; and an Environmental Management Program.

IMPLEMENTATION

The two requirements for implementation of an EMS is to define, document, and communicate roles, responsibilities and authorities, and to allocate the resources needed to implement and control the EMS.

CHECKING

The key requirement in this EMS step is to regularly monitor and measure key characteristics of activities and operations that could have a significant impact on the environment. Changes to EMS procedures may become necessary in order to deal with nonconformances with the EMS, with mitigating environmental impacts, or corrective and preventive action.

REVIEW

The management review process ensure that information is collected to enable management to carry out proper review. Top management review the need for changes to policy, objectives and targets, and ensure that a commitment to continual improvement is being demonstrated.
